5 tips to care for your e-BIKE battery

Electric bicycles are booming, with their increasingly modern design, these bikes come with improved motors and batteries with a longer life extension, allowing you to enjoy much longer routes or rides around the city. The battery is the heart of the e-BIKE, we can extend its life by treating it with care in its handling, storage and recharging. Today we bring you the 5 essential tips to take care of the battery of your electric bike.

Life cycles

One of the most important aspects of e-BIKES batteries is the number of life cycles, i.e. full charges. The life cycles of each battery vary according to the manufacturer, but are usually between 500 and 1000 cycles of use. As the cycles are consumed, the capacity of the battery is reduced to 70-80% of that of a new battery. For example, if the battery is at 50% and you charge it to 100%, this counts as half a charge cycle.

But not only does the number of cycles influence the wear of the battery, but also the conditions in which it is used and maintained, as the number of cycles can vary by factors such as the temperature to which the bike is exposed or how many full discharges have been made.

Charge the battery to 50%.

Recharging the battery when it is at 50% does not lead to increased wear, as current batteries do not have a memory effect.

But there are two simple habits that will help you improve its lifespan for better performance: don't drain the battery to the max and don't always charge it to 100%.

Loading process

Directly charging the battery as soon as you get home after an intense ride is not the best option. Regardless of whether you charge the battery separately or installed on the bike, it is recommended that after using the e-BIKE, you allow its charging cells to switch from the 'discharged' to the 'charged' state. This way the battery is optimized for charging.

In addition, it is important to take into account the temperature, since, after a route in extreme heat or cold conditions, it will be necessary to wait until the battery is at room temperature to charge it.

On the other hand, although batteries and chargers are prepared to stop receiving electricity once the charging cycle is finished, it is advisable to unplug it when it is already charged. A good option to avoid being aware of when it is finished charging is to install a timer in the socket to disconnect the electricity after a few hours of charging. If you leave it charging indefinitely, it may overcharge or heat up and this implies a risk to the health of the battery.

If you don't use the bike for a while...

Temperature and charge level are the two most important aspects if you are going to leave your e-BIKE unused for an extended period of time. First of all, whenever possible you should remove the battery from your bike and leave it in a place where the temperature is constant, around 18-20 degrees. If you cannot ensure that temperature, make sure that it is not very cold and humid or very hot.

In addition, you must leave it with a certain percentage of charge according to the battery brand. The batteries of our electric bike models are Shimano, so it will require a charge between 60-70%. Never discharged or with the maximum charge.
