Everything you need to know about the battery of your e-BIKE

Batteries play an important role in the autonomy and performance of the e-BIKES, if you have one or are considering investing in one, you may have many questions about the battery: life, autonomy, temperature, humidity, care, know everything you need to know about it and enjoy it without surprises.

What type of battery do they have?

Early electric bikes used heavy lead-acid batteries, but today's lithium batteries offer great advantages.

The advantages of using lithium include: lower energy density per cubic centimeter, no 'memory effect' and a greater number of recharge cycles. In other words, they weigh four times less than lead batteries, can be charged even if they have not been fully discharged, and last longer.

How much autonomy does the battery offer?

This is one of the most important factors to consider when buying an e-BIKE. The autonomy offered by the battery will depend largely on the model, it is not the same an E-MTB for mountain routes than a folding bike to transport you around the city.

In this case, we must look at the watts per hour, the more the battery has, the more kilometers it will allow you to do. But, from Momabikes we make it easy for you and we mark the autonomy offered by each of our models. If you want to make routes that exceed 100km, you should choose between the E-MTB 27.5'', the E-MTB 29'', the E-MTB Full Suspension 27.5'' or E-MTB Full Suspension 29'', the E-FAT PRO 26'' and the EBIKE 28 PRO, since they offer a range of up to 120km. On the other hand, if you want the e-BIKE to move around the city, a range of 80km, such as our folding model EBIKE 20'', the EBIKE 26 HYDR or the EBIKE 28 HYDR, will be enough.

It should also be taken into account that factors such as the weight of the rider will influence the autonomy. With a weight of less than 70 kg, the e-BIKE will offer greater autonomy and vice versa.

Battery life

Another question that may arise is how long the battery of an e-BIKE lasts and whether it will need to be replaced. The batteries of electric bikes, like the batteries of other technological devices that we use on a daily basis, degrade. At Momabikes we offer a 2 year warranty against manufacturing defects, but their useful life is much longer. It is not possible to know with certainty how long the battery of your e-BIKE will last, but we do know that depending on how you take care of it, you can extend its use.

Battery life is measured in terms of cycles of use, which are typically between 500 and 1000. As the cycles are consumed, the capacity of the battery is reduced up to 70-80% with respect to the new battery.

Temperature

Batteries reach optimum performance at temperatures around 20°C, and decrease as the temperature drops. Similarly, you should be careful with excessive temperatures, but in general, in winter you will be able to cover up to 30% less kilometers than in summer.

Can the batteries get wet?

This is one of the big doubts, and yes, they can get wet. Whether to wash them or if they are exposed to rain, they will not be damaged, but they cannot withstand being submerged in water or being washed with pressurized water. To wash your e-BIKE safely you should take into account certain aspects such as cleaning it often, not using pressurized water or lubricating the transmission after washing.

These are some of the main steps to safely clean your e-BIKE, if you want to know how to perform them correctly in depth, we explain it here.

How to take care of the e-BIKE battery

Extending the life of your e-BIKE battery is possible by treating it with care and following a few simple tips:

  • Do not drain the battery to the maximum.
  • Do not always charge the battery to 100%.
  • After a ride, wait until the battery is at room temperature to charge it.
  • Unplug the battery when it is already charged.
  • Keep the battery connections clean.
  • Avoid long exposures to the sun.
